Call for submissions

Join us for the EMEA Sector Systems Engineering Conference 2018 (EMEASEC 2018), the premier conference of systems engineering and related disciplines in the Europe, Middle-East and Africa (EMEA) Sector. The conference gives industry, organizations, educators, researchers, and government the opportunity to showcase cutting edge practice and research.

Please submit papers and tutorials that fall within the practice of systems engineering and associated disciplines. The theme of the conference, Systems Engineering – Connecting the World, focuses the application of systems thinking and systems engineering principles and processes on complex problems, such as the Internet of things, Industry 4.0, Digitalisation, Sustainability, Connected Home, Connected drive, etc.

EMEASEC 2018 provides the opportunity to network with professionals from many domains in Germany. Accepted papers will be presented and published in the proceedings of the conference and in the INCOSE technical library, earning publication credits. Delegates will also earn Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points for attending the conference.

The EMEASEC2018 will take place from 5th to 7th of November 2018 in Berlin. While the Tutorial session will take place on 5th of November and thePaper/Panel presentation on 6th and 7th of November 2018.

1. Submission Types

  • Paper, for presentation at the conference. Authors of accepted papers are expected to register and attend the conference to be eligible for publication in the proceedings, see chapter 3-4
  • Tutorial (conditions will be agreed with the author, depending on the nature of the accepted tutorial), see chapter 5-6.
  • Panels, for discussion at the conference. Panelists are expected to register and attend the conference, see chapter 7

2. Topics of Interest

The topics of relevance include but are not limited to:

  • Systems Engineering – Connecting the World
  • Application of systems thinking and systems engineering principles and processes on complex problems
    • Internet of things
    • Industry 4.0
    • Digitalisation
    • Sustainability
    • Connected Home
    • Connected drive
    • Autonomous systems

3. How to Submit an ACADEMIC paper

  • Prospective authors are invited to submit an academic paper (research) in any of the topics listed above. Instructions for preparing the manuscript are available at the website. Please also check the Submission Guidelines. Papers should be submitted electronically via the web-based submission system(EasyChair). A link for submissions is provided on the conference website at “Submit a paper”.
  • Papers of 8-15 pages (including graphics) will be accepted in MS Word 2007 or later format only. The conference language is English. Authors of accepted papers shall ensure that final submissions are edited if English is not the author’s first language.
  • Use the MS Word template, which can be downloaded from the conference website, for the paper.
  • A PowerPoint template to be used for the final presentation of accepted papers at the conference can be downloaded from the conference website.

4. How to Submit an INDUSTRIAL paper

  • Prospective authors are invited to submit an industrial paper in any of the topics listed above. Instructions for preparing the manuscript are available at the website. Please also check the Submission Guidelines. Papers should be submitted electronically via the web-based submission system (EasyChair). A link for submissions is provided on the conference website at “Submit a paper”.
  • Industrial papers are reports from practical systems engineering application providing lessons learned, tips and tricks and other valuable benefits for the participants. The main author and person giving the speech at the conference shall be a person from a company, a freelancer, or consultant.
  • Papers of 4pages (includingmax. 2graphics) will be accepted in MS Word 2007 or later format only. The conference language is English. Authors of accepted papers shall ensure that final submissions are edited if English is not the author’s first language.
  • The final presentation will be part of the official download!
  • Use the MS Word template, which can be downloaded from the conference website, for the paper.
  • A PowerPoint template to be used for the final presentation of accepted papers at the conference can be downloaded from the conference website.

5. TUTORIAL

Tutorial proposals for the following types of classroom forums will be considered:

  • Professional Development Tutorial: intended for both practicing Systems Engineers who want to expand their Systems Engineering skills and seasoned professionals who are new to INCOSE concepts of Systems Engineering. It is important not only to install in the tutorial participants a new skill, but also to make it clear how that skill can add real value to the participant’s enterprise.
  • Advanced Technology Tutorial: intended for practicing Systems Engineers. This introduces new technologies with potential to add real value to Systems Engineering practice although that potential has not yet been demonstrated.
  • Best Practices Implementation: intended for practicing Systems Engineers who are interested in understanding how to apply Systems Engineering best practices with a domain specific emphasis. The following requirements and constraints apply for developing your proposal:
    • The tutorial needs to be either Half Day (4 hrs) classroom format.
    • The tutorial shall contain appropriate student exercises and interactions.
    • The presenter(s) (up to a maximum of 2 per tutorial) shall document his/her expertise in the domain, and experience as a lecturer.
    • The tutorial shall not contain a sales presentation for the presenter or the presenter’s company, and shall not contain proprietary data.
    • The tutorial proposal shall explain the value of the tutorial to the attendees, follow the tutorial proposal template, be in MS Word 2003 or later format, and submitted according to the instructions on website.
    • The tutorial presentation shall be in electronic form based upon Microsoft PowerPoint 2003 or later. If a tutorial is selected for inclusion in the symposium, then the presenter(s) will be eligible for a discounted event registration rate; however, this does not include the annual INCOSE membership fee, or any other expenses. A tutorial agreement, which includes financial and cancellation agreements, will be forwarded at the time of acceptance notification.
    • Each tutorial submittal is reviewed by at least 3 members of the EMEASEC team.

6. How to Submit a TUTORIAL

  • Submission Details: Send the filled form to tutorial.emeasec@gfse.de
  • The tutorial will be a 4-hour tutorial on 5th of November 2018
  • Tutorial from freelancer and senior experts will be preferred accepted.
  • Use the MS Word template, which can be downloaded from the conference website, for the tutorial.
  • A PowerPoint template to be used for the final presentation of accepted tutorials at the conference can be downloaded from the conference website.

7. How to submit a Panel

  • Use the MS Word template, which can be downloaded from the conference website, for the panel.
  • Submission Details: Send the filled form to tutorial.emeasec@gfse.de
  • The time slot for a panel is 80 Minutes.
  • Panel participants have to register at least for the day of the panel.
  • Each tutorial submittal is reviewed by at least 3 members of the EMEASEC team.

8. Submission Timeline

  • 22 June 2018 : Review-ready Draft Paper & Tutorial & Panel Submission Deadline. Upload the paper in Word format using the required templateto Easy Chair.
  • 27 July 2018 : Notification of Paper & Tutorial & Panel acceptance
  • 31 August 2018 : Final Paper Submission

9. Paper Submission Review and Publication Process

  • All papers will be subjected to a double blind peer review process.
  • Submissions will be judged on a range of parameters including clarity of expression; effective communication of ideas. In particular the content must advance the knowledge base for, or the practice of, Systems Engineering. 
  • Papers must be submitted in English, the official language of the Conference.
  • Papers must describe original work that has not previously been presented at INCOSE International events.
  • Papers that do not conform to the submission instructions will be rejected without review.
  • The Technical chair may contact successful authors with further comments, intended to fit them with the other accepted papers into the program session and track themes.
  • Joint authors must nominate a single point of contact.
  • All authors shall sign an IP release, which is available on the website.
  • Accepted papers will be published in the conference proceedings, which will be available on electronic media provided to each delegate, and on the conference website. An ISBN will be assigned to the proceedings.

10. Registration information

  • At least one author of an accepted paper must register for the workshop, and the registration fees received before 15th of September 2018, to have the paper published in the conference proceedings book.
  • 1 free registration is offered for an accepted Tutorial.
  • All participants to a panel have to register at least forthe day the panel will be in the program.
